Where it is in your home

Usually avoided

Traditional Vastu usually advises against the north-east for a kitchen.

Preferred for this room: south-east.

Inside the kitchen, the guide places the stove toward the south-east and the sink toward the east. If the room can’t move, these are worth trying.

Vastu is a traditional belief system, so treat this as a preference and not a safety or structural rule. Gas, drainage, ventilation and your engineer's advice come first.

Describe your space. Get a reasoned answer, not a rulebook.

Vastu depends on your layout. The same south-west door reads differently in a corner flat and an interior unit. Tell Dozi about your plan and ask follow-up questions in the same chat.

Dozi's chat answering: The kitchen sits in the north-east corner, and the builder says it is fine. Is it?

A real answer: “The kitchen sits in the north-east corner, and the builder says it is fine. Is it?”

It can work practically, but it is not the preferred Vastu placement; Vastu usually favours the south-east, with the north-west as an alternative.

A north-east kitchen is traditionally considered less suitable in Vastu because that zone is associated with water, prayer and openness. This is a belief-based preference, not proof that the kitchen will cause health or money problems.

If the kitchen is already fixed, keep it clean, bright and well ventilated. Move the hob away from the exact north-east corner only if it can be done safely; a safe gas and ventilation setup matters more than facing a preferred direction.

Check the gas connection, drainage, power points and exhaust route before considering any relocation. Don’t shift the kitchen just for Vastu if that would compromise those services.

Yellow or soft colours are optional traditional choices, not a guaranteed correction.

What to say: “Could you show me how the kitchen’s gas, drainage and exhaust are planned? I understand it may work practically, but I’d like to check the Vastu placement and safe hob position before finalising it.”

How to check the Vastu of a flat

Stand at the centre of the flat with a compass, or use the plan if north is marked on it, and work out which of the eight directions each room falls in. Check where the room sits from the centre of the home, not which way the building faces. Then look up each room in the checker above.

Start with the main door, kitchen and master bedroom, since those are the hardest to change. If you are buying a flat that is still being built, ask for the dimensioned floor plan before you book.

Checking Vastu online: what a room check can and can't tell you

This check tells you what the tradition says about one room in one direction. It can't see how your rooms relate, what sits at the door or how your plot is shaped. It doesn't read floor plans, and this page doesn't accept uploads. Reviewing a plan file in Dozi's chat needs a login and a paid plan.

Does Vastu apply in flats?

Many families follow it in flats too, using the same directions. You usually can't move a kitchen or a toilet in a flat, so focus on what you can choose before buying, and on things like where the stove or bed goes afterwards.

Vastu is a traditional belief system, so there is no proof that a mismatch causes health or money problems. Don't compromise gas, drainage, ventilation or structure for it.

Checking a whole house

When you are building, you can apply these preferences while the plan is still on paper. Start with plot selection, then Vastu basics for home construction, and review the common mistakes before the drawings are final.

Answers come from Dozi's own Vastu guides and describe traditional preferences. Vastu practitioners don't all agree, so another may advise differently. Nothing here is structural or safety advice.
